BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Emanuel Johannes Hubmann, is a Swiss cellist, artist and engineer. He was solo-cellist of the Academic Orchestra Zurich (AOZ) from spring 2022 until his graduation in winter 2024 with regular concerts in Tonhalle Zurich. During this period, he performed orchestra works including Beethoven 9th sympony, Brahms 1st symphony, Glinka ouverture “Ruslan and Ljudmila”, Mahler 2nd Symphony, Price 3rd Symphony, Rachmaninow “Symphonic Dances”, Ravel “La Valse” and Piano “Concerto for the left hand”, Strawinsky “Fire Bird Suite”, Tschaikowsky 6th symphony and Wagner ouverture “Fliegender Holländer”, and 2nd Act of “Tristan and Isolde”.
He regularly organizes and performs in chamber music concerts in Zurich in the Lavatersaal and Kapelle Helferei in formations including solo, cello piano duo, piano trio, string quartet, string sextet,and octet formations. With colleagues he organized the Slowenian premiere of Thomas Helms “Intermezzo” for Cello ensemble.
He won in 2006 the 1st prize of the regional swiss youth music competition in Eschen (FL), in 2010 the chamber music competition of Kantonsschule am Burggraben with Alfons Karl Zwicker in the jury, in 2021 the 2nd prize of the music plattform competition of ETH und UZH Zurich, and in 2022 the solo-cello position of the European Student Orchestra but could not take part due to Covid illness.
Emanuel took part in cello master classes and got coaching from Claudius Herrmann (Phil. Zürich), Paul Handschke (TOZ), Ofer Canetti (SKO), Christian Proske (TOZ/ZHdK), Lev Sivkov (Phil. Zürich), Flurin Cuonz, Blaise Dejardin (BSO) and Florian Barak (Phil. RhPf).
Emanuel learnt from chamber music professionals in masterclasses such as Carmina Quartett, Janos Ecsehgy (Bad. St.Th. Karlsruhe/violin), Beate Springorum (MPhil/viola), Manuel Hofer (SKO/viola), Kristie Su (Antwerp SO/violin), Rok Palcic (piano), Irina Simon-Renes (SKO/violin), Jan Bjøranger (violin), Peter Dürst (Sinfonieorchester SG/violin), Bernhard Ruchti (piano), Annlynn Miller (piano). After having as cello teachers Chiara Samatanga (Enderle), Ulrich Schmid and Johanna Degen he is currently studying at ZHdK with Claudius Herrmann, solo-cellist of Philharmonia Zurich (Opera Zurich) within a CAS program.
